The Trail Foundation Logo
Support the Trail Foundation! Those of us who racewalk, run, walk or bike on our beautiful Hike & Bike Trail around Town Lake should also support it. A great way to do this is by joining The Trail Foundation. Recently, annual donations from members have helped bring about complete renovations of the trailhead at “The Rock” and of Lou Neff Point, more than 100 newly-planted trees, new lighting, more than 30 maintained gardens along the Trail and the first new Trail restroom since the 1970’s! Currently, they are collecting funds to complete the trail throughout its entire 10-mile length, including the new boardwalk over the water on the north side.

To find out more about how
The Trail Foundation is working with the City of Austin to continually provide improvements to the Trail and what you can do to help, explore their website. You can join for as little as $45 for an individual membership.

Reporter Shivani Vora of the New York Times produced this piece for the “Urban Athlete” column in the Times on November 19, 2010. (Requires free NY Times registration.) It’s about racewalking in New York City, mostly about two clubs, the Park Racewalkers and the New York Walkers Club.

ESPN.com writer Jim Caple wrote this column on July 6, 2008: “Lack of Respect? Racewalking Relegated to the Parking Lot”, about the men’s 20km racewalk event at the Olympic Trials in Eugene, OR. A positive article about how our sport does not get the respect it deserves.

eRaceWalk.com has some very interesting content, such as a video of a world-class racewalker moving at a 6-minute-mile pace, a moving cartoon stick figure that illustrates the mechanics of racewalking and some animated video of racewalkers that you can slow down and stop in order to study their technique. Lots of training information, a store with books and videos and links to other sites.

Here is an article in the November 20, 2007 edition of the New York Times "Science Times" section. It's about a research study of 500 older people for over a decade that found that those who walked more quickly were less likely to die over the course of the study.

If you use orthotics in your racewalking shoes, you may find that a hard plastic orthotic, good for running, is too inflexible for racewalking. Podiatrist Dr. Michael Valenza of the Austin Foot Center can make you a pair of flexible orthotics that are better suited for racewalking. But many people discover that racewalking delivers them from the need for orthotics.

Many of the sites mentioned here include more links to other racewalking-related sites. If you have a racewalking site in mind that you think should be included here, please let us know.
